5 Using Custom Checkpoints for Better Images

“Il Penseroso's Platonist toiled on
In some like chamber, shadowing forth
How the daemonic rage
Imagined everything.”

-- William Butler Yeats, My House

This chapter covers

  • Understanding the terms: model, fine-tuning and checkpoints
  • Downloading models from CivitAI
  • Running a variety of custom checkpoints
  • Learning to prompt better by exploring model pages
  • Searching for checkpoints on Hugging Face
  • Using checkpoints with Hugging Face diffusers

So far in the book we’ve only utilized community created tools that make it easier to work with base Stable Diffusion, such as A1111 and Hugging Face diffusers. In this and subsequent chapters we’ll start playing with changing the way Stable Diffusion itself behaves by replacing components discussed in chapter 4 with ones customized by the community. The impact of this customizations will create major improvements in the quality of the images we generate, easily rivaling what can be created by proprietary commercial offers.
