4 Getting interviews

This chapter covers

  • Getting your resume seen by the right people
  • Working with recruiters when your incentives are not aligned
  • Building the right type of network to get you jobs with no competition
  • How to get influencers to recommend you for jobs
  • Using AI tools to save time and improve results

In chapter 2, we compared your resume to marketing collateral in a sales campaign. For marketing collateral to be helpful, it must reach your target audience. When job hunting in the data science field, our target audience is the recruiter or hiring manager trying to fill the type of jobs we want.

When marketers talk about sending their collateral to their target audience, they refer to the delivery method as a marketing channel. This chapter is all about understanding your options for marketing channels and helping you select the ones that work best for different situations. Identifying and putting your energy into the proper channels can save you time and improve your chances of getting interviews and ultimately landing your target job.

This chapter will explore multiple marketing channels to help you obtain interviews. There are three main channels:

  • Applying directly to job openings that you see advertised;
  • Capitalizing on your professional network;
