This chapter covers

  • Protecting the root account and starting cloud operations safely
  • Understanding how cloud computing considers costs

  • Setting connections between on-premise and cloud environments to access private resources

2.1      The cloud journey begins

Our journey begins at Corporate C, a small mid-sized company that produces and sells wood furniture. IT-wise, they rely to an on-premise datacenter they own to run all the software needed to manage orders, fulfillments, procurement, shipping, and sales. The company has been running successfully locally in the country, and they look forward to expanding the business by launching a global e-commerce.

The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Corporate C asks the IT manager to evaluate the use of cloud computing to host the e-commerce site due to the distributed nature of the project and the need to adjust to seasonal peaks such as Christmas’ or Black Friday’s. The IT Manager kicks off the project by giving a two-person team, Lisa and John, the goal of realizing in a month a first proof of concept (PoC).
