4 Taking the less traveled path

This chapter covers

  • Recognizing common challenges faced by those seeking an entry-level security job
  • Getting to know yourself and writing a personal objective
  • Linking core skills to your objective and potential security roles
  • Creating a capabilities inventory
  • Identifying and documenting your skills gap

The best way to prepare yourself for your first cybersecurity job is to realize that there is no best way. My social media direct messages are filled with people who ask what seems like a simple question: “How do I start working in security?” Many are looking for a detailed step-by-step process that they should follow. Some want me to tell them what training or certification they need in order to get a job in security. The fact is, there is no one way. Perhaps more than in any other field, cybersecurity professionals have some of the most diverse backgrounds and crazy stories about getting started in security.

Deciding the correct path to take in developing your skills and positioning yourself to win that first job requires quite a bit of introspection. You have to understand what your goals are. Sure, they may change over time, but having something you are aiming for is critically important to building a career. You need to self-analyze and really figure out what motivates you, what makes you want to dig in, and what ultimately will spark your passion. You are going to need that motivation and passion to pursue this career.
