7 Federated Computational Governance
This chapter covers
- Understanding our definition of “Data Governance”
- Learning the key benefits of Data Governance
- Defining the expected deliverables of Data Governance
- Structuring data-related policies
- “Federating” Data Governance
- Making Data Governance computational
In chapter 4, we kick-started our Data Mesh and included a lot of governance work right from the start. This chapter dives deeper into how to perform this crucial step.
Note
Why this chapter is “theory-heavy”
While we understand that readers want to get straight to the implementation of Data Governance, we believe this would be counterproductive. There are too many ways to approach this topic. Governance centralization and automation may be implemented at many levels, creating a vast matrix, impossible to describe in a single chapter. Instead, we try to show you options and give you pointers on starting the governance design and implementation processes. Still, you need to envision how to utilize governance best to derive value in your organization.
First, we will discuss what Data Governance is and paint a broad brush picture of what it means to federate it and make it computational.
Second, we will explain why implementing Data Governance is a good idea. At the beginning of this book, we indicated that you could implement the principles we describe with different levels of detail. The second section explains why this non-technical activity may add value to your business.
