Part 2. The four principles in practice

The second part of the book will provide you with the tools to tackle the four principles of the data mesh for advancing your data mesh beyond the first month. In the chapters of this part, we will deep dive into one of four principles.

We will start with the Domain Ownership principle; we will provide you with practical methods of defining domains and business capabilities, and assigning ownership of data.

Next, we show you how to change your perspective from “data as a by-product” to “data as a product.” You will learn how to define and describe data products to make them findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable.

We will follow with the practicalities of implementing the Federated Computational Governance principle. You will learn the benefits and disadvantages of centralized and decentralized governance models, and how to find a balance between them, well-fitted to your organization.

We will finish with the Self-serve Data Platform principle, the technology enabling the data mesh. We also will provide you with the implementation details of “platform thinking.”
