Deep Learning with Structured Data MEAP V06 cover

Thank you for purchasing the MEAP for Deep Learning with Structured Data. I’ve really enjoyed writing the material that is currently in the book. I hope that you find this material useful and I’m looking forward to your feedback on the current material as well as what you’d like to see in the remainder of the book.

To get the most benefit from this book you should be familiar with classic (non-deep learning) machine learning, including algorithms like logistic regression. This book doesn’t expect that you have a complete understanding of deep learning but you should have an idea of how it differs from other machine learning  approaches. To follow along with the code examples in this book you should be comfortable working with Python in Jupyter Notebooks. This book doesn’t assume that you use a particular development environment to exercise the code examples, but to get the most out of the code you should be comfortable with one of the common cloud environments like AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, or IBM Cloud.

When I began to explore deep learning I was very excited about its potential but disappointed at how hard it was to find complete examples of applying deep learning to the kinds of problems that I face in my day-to-day job. I work with tabular, structured data every day, but the examples of deep learning that I could find deal with the kind of data that simply doesn’t cross my desk: images, video, or unstructured text.
