Part 3 discusses visual design language basics. These elements bring your website to life! We will cover the fundamentals of layout, common layout patterns, and how to use animation to enhance your layout. Then we will get into typography and color before applying what you’ve learned in this part of the book.
Chapter 6 picks up right after chapter 5 and goes into more depth about defining a website’s structure and how you can lay content out. You can stick to some common patterns before getting too experimental with the layout. This chapter also covers responsive design and the different form factors to think about when adapting your layout to be responsive.
Chapter 7 brings in some elements of fun by using animation to enhance your layout and overall design. Animation can be used in several ways to make an experience memorable or serve a functional purpose. We will review some scenarios you could use, how to plan for animations, and technical considerations of animation-heavy designs.
Chapter 8 gives a high-level overview of typography on the web. Typography is a key visual element, as whatever type you choose can change the entire undertone of a design. We will discuss how to pair typefaces and establish a type ramp and vertical rhythm, which can immediately make a web page feel more polished.
