Chapter 2. Designing for regular use: addressing planned behavior

This chapter covers

  • Understanding the principle of planned behavior
  • Ensuring your design accommodates planned behavior
  • Identifying opportunities to design for users’ plans
  • Designing for planned behavior with others
  • Applying planned behavior in digital design contexts

Daniel is a designer at a bank working on a new personal financial management application. He used his knowledge of planned behavior to design the app to account for many beliefs he knows the bank’s customers have: they want to save money, they believe the bank provides reliable financial advice, and they believe personal financial management applications give them more control over their financial decisions. Daniel and his product team at the bank also make the app available free of charge for those holding an account with the bank. Daniel uses this information to craft an email informing bank customers of the new application and asking them to download the application to their smartphone or tablet.
