This chapter covers

  • The role of cognitive psychology in mastering behavioral-level design
  • The foundational pillars of usability
  • Strategies for measuring and enhancing usability
  • The interplay of memory, thought processes, and cognitive load in crafting user-friendly experiences

Welcome to the next stage of our design journey: the Behavioral Level. Here, we’ll focus on how intuitive and user-friendly your product is. For that, we’ll treat functionality as the heart of the user experience that shapes how users feel about your product.

Figure 4.1 Behavioral Level of Design

In the previous chapters, we covered the rules of psychology that help us make a pleasant first impression on users. With them, we can already create a neat and clean UI. But the time has come to take it to the next level, which is called Behavioral Level. It’s about making things not only look good but work seamlessly, as well as ensuring that your design is as brain-friendly as possible.

4.1 Designing on the Behavioral Level

Getting this right means really tuning into what your users need and crafting a product that sings to their preferences. And guess what? You don't need to reinvent the wheel to excel in behavioral design. A keen eye for usability and a commitment to making it easy for the user will suffice.
