1.1 The power of search
Every day, interaction with data becomes progressively more central to most aspects of modern life. As technology has progressed, the tools we use to access and consume data have diversified. Perhaps as you read this you can feel a buzz notification from a smartwatch on your wrist or a smartphone in your pocket. Maybe, like me, you have a device nearby quietly listening for a wake phrase; eager to answer a question or take an order. As computing devices and our use of them has evolved, search has emerged as the most common and preferred method of interacting with data. Search has become so ubiquitous that we quite often interact with search engines and don’t even know it.
