Acknowledgments

Many people have inspired and made contributions to this book. First and foremost I want to thank James Warren. He led analytics at RockYou, and together we evangelized the use of Hadoop throughout the organization. I learned a lot from him, and he even lent a hand in some of the initial writings.

I’ve been lucky to have many people contribute interesting case studies from outside the Web 2.0 industry. For this I need to thank Zhiguo Luo, Meng Xu, Shaoling Sun, Ken MacInnis, Ryan Rawson, Vuk Ercegovac, Rajasekar Krishnamurthy, Sriram Raghavan, Frederick Reiss, Eugene Shekita, Sandeep Tata, Shivakumar Vaithyanathan, and Huaiyu Zhu.

I also want to thank the many reviewers of this book. They provided valuable feedback to my early drafts. In particular, Paul O’Rorke was the technical reviewer that went beyond his call of duty and made some wonderful suggestions on how to make the manuscript better. I look forward to seeing him author his own book at some point. I also enjoyed many long chats with Jonathan Cao. His expertise in databases and large-scale systems provided a broad perspective to understanding the capabilities of Hadoop.
