Acknowledgments

This book, like Linux itself, was a collaboration among amazing people.

I can’t thank Frances Lefkowitz, my editor, enough. She constantly pushed me to improve and clarify, but also to find my own voice. Working with her was like taking a writing seminar and I’m incredibly grateful I had the chance to work with her.

Greg Wild, also of Manning, saw (and sees) the potential of Linux for a wider audience. He worked with me to organize and conceptualize the book and those early meetings were very important in terms of shaping this book.

Of course, I’m grateful to everyone else at Manning who worked to get this book out. I extend my appreciation to the following reviewers whose suggestions were always welcome: Aditya Sharma, Arnaldo Ayala, Fabrizio Cucci, Gavin Baumanis, Jean-François Morin, László Hegedüs, Luke Greenleaf, Mayur Patil, Michel Klomp, Nick McGinness, Robert Walsh, Sau Fai Fong, Selcuk Beydilli, Shawn Bolan, and Terry Rickman. Thank you to the entire production team including copyeditor, Ben Berg; proofreader, Elizabeth Martin; my wonderfully calming production editor, David Novak; and all those operating behind the scenes. Everyone I worked with had only one goal—to create the best book possible.

This book began with a month-long professional leave from my academic librarian position to develop a book about Linux. I’m grateful to my union, the Professional Staff Congress, for negotiating that wonderful benefit.
