preface
Math—that single word can trigger a slight sense of panic for many of us in the creative and visual world of web development, perhaps even a pit-of-the-stomach-deep feeling of dread. Why the foreboding? Because just reading that four-letter word often brings back memories of being bored out of our skulls as a chalk-dusted teacher droned out about abstract equations and endless proofs that felt disconnected from the tangible things of the world. True, your web dev work isn’t a tangible thing either, but you’re still trying to make things that look good and work well. If you’ve ever thought, “Dammit, Jim, I’m a designer/developer, not a mathematician,” then that word math might strike fear in you to this day.
But that is precisely why I wrote this book: the truth is, you’re already using math every day. It’s the silent partner behind every fluid animation, every perfectly balanced layout, and every responsive grid. That satisfying snap of an element locking into place or the organic feel of a physics-based transition isn’t magic—it’s logic. This book isn’t about turning you into a mathematician but about translating that logic into a practical and creative tool you can use with confidence.
