20 Animal care and guardianship just became crystal clear

Dr. Andrew Rowan, Chris Raczkowski, and Liwen Zhang

Transformative opportunities for SSI exist beyond the scope of identifiers and credentials for humans. The authors of this chapter are thought leaders for decentralized digital identity as applied to animals. Dr. Rowan has enjoyed a 40-year career dedicated to animal welfare, including long-term positions as the director of the Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine Center for Animals and Public Safety, CEO of Humane Society International, and chief scientific officer for the Humane Society of the United States. Liwen completed post-graduate studies at the University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work Institute for Human-Animal Connection and has helped start animal welfare not-for-profit organizations in China and Canada. Chris is a passionate entrepreneur with 20+ years of experience starting and leading companies focused on sustainable development in Asia, Europe, and North America, including SSI-oriented companies. All three authors are also dedicated guardians of a variety of pets! Their goal is to bring about a global paradigm shift where people and societies expect that animals with human or organizational guardians have legitimate digital identity credentials that acknowledge them as unique individuals with verifiable status in our digital society.
