Chapter 7. MOSS user profiles

This chapter covers

  • Describing MOSS user profiles
  • Using audience targeting
  • Extending the MOSS user profile with BDC
  • Working with audiences

Every user in SharePoint has a user profile, which includes not only a name and password but also information such as a photograph, skills, the person she reports to, and so on. The SharePoint administrator can set which of these properties should be used within SharePoint and can set each property to be read-only, or to allow users to edit properties. For example, the user’s cell phone number would be a property that the user should be able to edit, whereas the Reports To property may be imported from another application or the Active Directory.

This profile information can be searched upon using the MOSS Search Center. You can search for a user by name or by any of the fields. For example, we could search for “Brett Lonsdale” if we knew that person’s name, or search for “Turn eyelids inside out” as a skill, which may bring up my name also. The results are shown as regular search results. The hyperlink for each search result points to the user’s My Site. This is useful for finding someone in your organization who has a particular skill or reports to a particular person.
