Chapter 5. Storage design considerations

Denny Cherry

As a DBA, you need to have at least a basic understanding of the hardware underneath the databases. If you don’t know what’s going on under the covers, you can’t make intelligent decisions about your database servers’ configuration. Many storage array vendors tout their arrays as a black box that can fix all problems. But in reality that isn’t the case, and you need to be careful when making storage design decisions.

Selecting the correct RAID type

There are several types of RAID (redundant array of independent disks, or redundant array of inexpensive disks) configurations you can choose from, and each has specific pros and cons.

RAID 0

File placement

Disk alignment

Snapshots

Clones
