Discussing and showing results can have drastic consequences on the life of the presenter, even if you’re just presenting facts. That was the case of Andreas Georgiou, an Greek economist with a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.
One of the countries hit hardest by the financial crisis of 2007 and 2008 was Greece. The Greek debt crisis started in late 2009 and in May the following year, the Greek government announced a series of austerity measures which were made a condition for a large loan. Andreas Georgiou was later, in August 2010, appointed president of the national statistical office in Greece (commonly known as ELSTAT).
After Andreas Georgiou took office, the statistical office published different statistics on national debt than had previously been published. In fact, it had been shown in a report from the European statistical office in January 2010 that the government of Greece had been hiding its debts by misreporting the country’s economic statistics. Under Andreas Georgiou, the national statistical office started to report accurate rather than false statistics.
