Appendix A. The SATs and your calculator

The SATs are the most important test in many young students’ lives. This three-and-a-half-hour test is one of the major components of many college applications and measures aptitude in math, reading, and writing. Although a calculator isn’t required for the math portion of the test, a majority of SAT test-takers use one, and most use TI graphing calculators. But it’s important to know how to make your graphing calculator serve as a helpful tool. You need to know which questions you should try to use your calculator with and which questions are cleverly phrased to be solvable with little to no math. This appendix will demonstrate what you need to know to effectively use your TI-83 Plus or TI-84 Plus calculator for the SATs through sample problems.

A.1. Solving SAT math problems

A.2. Multiple-choice questions

A.3. Student-produced response questions
