Chapter 14. Panorama and pivot controls

This chapter covers

  • Using panoramas
  • Pivoting views
  • Filtering data

The built-in Windows Phone applications provide a rich experience, allowing the user to use pan and flick gestures to quickly navigate their way through a large amount of data. Most of these applications are grouped into two categories: panorama applications and pivot applications. The People Hub, Photos Hub, and Music + Videos Hub are all panorama applications. The Messaging, Email, Phone, and Settings applications are all built with a Pivot control.

The Panorama control is used across the phone when the main screen of the application provides a rich graphical front end to quickly access favorite and recently used content. Items appearing in the panorama are links to other pages where the content is viewed or manipulated. The Pivot control is similar to a tab control, where discrete pages display different sets of data or settings to the user. The Email application is one example that uses a Pivot control to present separate pages for All, Unread, and Marked messages.
