Argo CD application

As explained in Platform Engineering on Kubernetes

An Argo CD application is a declarative Argo CD resource that associates source configuration with a destination cluster and synchronizes Kubernetes resources.

An Argo CD application connects configuration in a Git repository to a destination Kubernetes cluster and synchronizes the declared resources there. Argo CD uses applications to represent environments; here, one application represents the staging environment for the Conference application. section 4.2 section 4.2.1

Configure an application by specifying:

  • A name and Argo CD project, such as the default project. section 4.2.1
  • A Git repository, revision, and path containing the environment configuration. section 4.2.1
  • A destination cluster and namespace, with an option to create the namespace automatically. section 4.2.1
  • Synchronization behavior and Helm parameters when the repository path contains a Helm chart. section 4.2 section 4.2.1

Staging environment

Create an application for the staging directory under chapter-4/argo-cd/staging/, select the desired branch or tag, target the cluster running Argo CD, and use the staging namespace. Argo CD can then sync the Helm-defined Conference application and show whether the environment is healthy. section 4.2.1

How Platform Engineering on Kubernetes covers it

How deep it goes
Explains creation through the UI, including source, revision, path, destination, namespace, synchronization, and Helm parameters.
Examples
Uses the Conference staging environment, a Git repository path, Helm configuration, and a destination cluster.
What it assumes
Requires an installed Argo CD instance and a Git repository containing environment configuration.
What you can do after
Operate Argo CD through its UI or CLI to configure, synchronize, and monitor a Kubernetes environment.
How it connects
Connects Git, Helm, Kubernetes clusters, namespaces, Kubernetes RBAC, and environment synchronization.
