A check box is a small square form control for an independent yes-or-no, accept-or-reject, or on-or-off choice. Clicking it adds a checkmark; clicking it again removes the checkmark. section 8.3.5
Use a check box when a form needs a single independent choice:
- Leave it unchecked when the user does not want an option, such as future-event notifications. section 8.3.5
- Start it checked when the user is expected to accept an option, such as subscribing to a newsletter. section 8.3.5
- Choose radio buttons instead when the user must select one option from several alternatives. section 8.3.5 section 8.7
