Cloud Native Buildpacks automate application deployment by inspecting source code and configuring a server, virtual machine, or container image. Developers push code through Git and provide a small startup declaration rather than manually defining every runtime detail. section 8.0
A Python application
A Procfile might contain `web: gunicorn main:app`. Finding `requirements.txt` leads the buildpack toward Python; finding `package.json` leads it toward Node.js. The code itself supplies much of the runtime configuration. section 8.0
Buildpacks make deployment convenient, but leave important portability concerns unresolved:
- Infer operating-system runtime configuration instead of declaring it explicitly in a Dockerfile or infrastructure-as-code tool. section 8.0
- May not support the precise runtime version an application requires, such as Python 3.11 or Node.js 18.17 LTS. section 8.0
- Can create container images through the open-source `pack` tool. section 8.0
