Clusterip service type

As explained in Google Anthos in Action

A ClusterIP is a stable, cluster-internal virtual IP address assigned to a Kubernetes Service.

A ClusterIP is a stable virtual IP for a Kubernetes Service inside a cluster. It balances traffic across the Service’s Pods, whose individual IP addresses can change when they move between nodes. ClusterIPs are not reachable from outside the cluster. section 10.2.1

Declare an internal Service

For a guestbook frontend, set `spec.type: ClusterIP`, select Pods labeled `app: guestbook`, and expose port 80. Other services in the cluster can use its ClusterIP. section 10.2.1

NodePort service resolution

kube-proxy using iptables

cilium-agent using eBPF on eth0 TC hooks

Load balancer service resolution

kube-proxy using iptables redirecting to service chain

cilium-agent using eBPF on eth0 TC hooks (same hook as previously)

Network policy enforcement

Calico using iptables

cilium-agent using eBPF on socket as well as eth0 TC hooks

Compare how the existing and new data planes resolve ClusterIP Services: kube-proxy uses iptables; cilium-agent uses eBPF on sockets. section 10.2.1

How Google Anthos in Action covers it

How deep it goes
Defines addressing and reachability, then compares two resolution mechanisms without detailing their implementation.
Examples
Shows a guestbook frontend Service manifest with `type: ClusterIP`, a Pod selector, and port 80.
What it assumes
Assumes familiarity with Pods and Services while distinguishing stable Service addresses from changing Pod addresses.
What you can do after
Operate/configure it by declaring a ClusterIP Service for cluster-internal access to selected Pods.
How it connects
Connects ClusterIPs to Pod IP addresses, Kubernetes Services, kube-proxy, iptables, and eBPF.
