Connection management keeps a live streaming connection usable while an AI-generated response arrives incrementally. It handles interruptions and reconnections so the user can continue receiving the response without rebuilding this behavior from scratch. section 3.2.1
A streaming implementation coordinates several responsibilities:
- The client requests a streaming response, while the server begins sending available data instead of waiting for the complete response. section 3.2.1
- The Vercel AI SDK manages the live server connection and abstracts interruption and reconnection handling. section 3.2.1
- Buffering and centralized error handling keep arriving data usable and let the interface report midstream failures clearly. section 3.2.1
Streaming an AI response
A browser requests an AI-generated response. The server sends chunks as they become available, and the SDK maintains the live connection so an interruption can be handled without breaking the experience. section 3.2.1
Figure 3.4 With streaming, the client sends a request, and the server sends the response in small chunks that are being streamed back to the client for processing.
Use the streaming architecture figure to see how small server-sent chunks travel back to the client for processing. section 3.2.1
