A custom hook is a reusable React function that composes built-in hooks to encapsulate stateful behavior and related logic. It keeps components focused on rendering while isolating state management, API calls, and other interaction logic. section 2.5.3 section 2.5.4
Design a custom hook by moving through these implementation steps:
- Name the hook descriptively according to its purpose. section 2.5.4
- Identify internal state and expose only the values and handlers consuming components need. section 2.5.4
- Extract helper functions for complex state updates or data manipulation, accepting helpers as arguments when useful. section 2.5.4
- Use built-in hooks such as useState, useReducer, and useEffect to manage state and side effects. section 2.5.4
useChatFormSubmit
A chat page delegates submission behavior to useChatFormSubmit(getAssistantResponse). The hook stores messages, the current input, and loading status; trims and validates input; clears the field; appends a generated user message; then requests the assistant response. The component can render messages and loading feedback without containing the interaction workflow itself. section 2.5.4
