Extern

As explained in Modern C

extern is a C declaration specifier that declares an entity defined elsewhere and can be associated with external or internal linkage.

extern declares an entity defined elsewhere. For variables, it designates an object with static storage duration, typically defined at file scope and possibly in another translation unit. section 13.2 section 13.2.1

A block-scope extern can refer to another object

With `unsigned i = 1;` at file scope and `unsigned i = 2;` inside `main`, the declaration `extern unsigned i;` inside the `if` block refers to the existing file-scope object, not the local object. The true branch therefore prints `1`; the `else` branch uses the local `i` and prints `2`. The inner declaration changes which object the identifier denotes without creating a new definition. section 13.2

How Modern C covers it

How deep it goes
Explains declaration, definition, scope, shadowing, linkage, and storage duration through one worked example.
Examples
Uses file-scope and block-scope declarations of i to show an extern declaration selecting an existing object.
What it assumes
Assumes scope, identifiers, objects, and definitions while clarifying their differences through shadowing.
What you can do after
Apply it via C declarations to distinguish referring to an existing object from defining a new object.
How it connects
Connects extern with scope, shadowing, definitions, linkage, static storage duration, and translation units.
