Failover priority

As explained in Microsoft Azure in Action

Failover priority is a numeric ordering that determines which configured location receives traffic first when failover occurs.

Failover priority is a numeric ordering for configured Azure Cosmos DB regions. Priority 0 is highest and normally identifies the primary region; higher values follow as takeover order. section 11.4.2 section 11.1.2

Australia first, Europe next

A Cosmos DB account can assign Australia East failoverPriority=0 and West Europe failoverPriority=1. Australia East handles normal operations, while West Europe is next if the primary region fails. section 11.1.2

When configuring regional failover, remember:

  • Set each region's priority as an integer, using 0 for the highest priority. section 11.4.2
  • Use multiple locations to provide regional resilience; zone redundancy separately protects replicas from zone-level failures. section 11.4.2
  • Remember that zone redundancy adds storage and replication cost. section 11.1.2

Compare Azure CLI configurations with and without zone redundancy while keeping the failover order visible. section 11.4.2

How Microsoft Azure in Action covers it

How deep it goes
Defines integer ordering and demonstrates Azure CLI placement, but does not detail automatic failover procedures.
Examples
Uses Australia East and West Europe assignments plus Azure CLI configurations for Australian and United States regions.
What it assumes
Assumes basic Azure CLI and Cosmos DB account knowledge while defining priority values from zero.
What you can do after
Operate/configure Cosmos DB regional locations with explicit primary and successor priorities through Azure CLI.
How it connects
Connects multi-region replication with primary regions, regional failover, and zone redundancy.
