A functional dependency means an attribute’s value is determined by a key or another attribute. It is a practical test for whether a relation stores facts at the right level: in second normal form (2NF), every non-key attribute must depend on the whole key. section 4.1.3
Watch for two common dependency mistakes:
- Partial dependency: in a relation with a composite key, an attribute depends on only part of that key. Product Type Description depends on Product Type Name, not on the complete Product key. section 4.1.3
- Transitive dependency: an attribute depends on a nonprime attribute rather than directly on the candidate key. This violates third normal form (3NF). section 4.1.3
Separate the fact that determines the description
Move Product Type Name and Product Type Description into their own relation, make Product Type Name the prime attribute, and retain Product Type Name in Product as a foreign key. This removes the partial dependency and brings the design to 2NF. section 4.1.3
Inspect the normalized ERD to see dependencies represented as separate relations linked by keys. section 4.1.3
