Joining state

As explained in Akka in Action, Second Edition

The joining state is the cluster membership state assigned to a node that has requested to join but is not yet fully admitted.

Joining is the cluster-membership state assigned to a node after it requests admission but before the leader moves it to Up. It marks a transitional lifecycle stage rather than full cluster membership. section 8.2.3 section 8.6

A node typically passes through this sequence:

Joining a two-node cluster

A second seed node contacts the first node and receives an acknowledgement. The first node logs that the second is JOINING, then reports that the leader is moving it to Up. In a bootstrapped cluster, the first node can form the cluster and become Up before accepting the second node's join request. section 8.2.3 section 13.1.2

How Akka in Action, Second Edition covers it

How deep it goes
Explains the state-machine transition from join request through Joining to Up, but does not detail the complete membership protocol.
Examples
Uses seed-node startup logs, InitJoin messages, a two-node bootstrap, and role-based worker thresholds.
What it assumes
Assumes basic ActorSystem and cluster configuration knowledge, while demonstrating seed-node discovery and admission through runnable startup commands.
What you can do after
Operate/configure Akka clusters by recognizing admission logs and setting membership thresholds before nodes become Up.
How it connects
Connects seed nodes, cluster bootstrap, leader election, role-based membership prerequisites, and the Up state.
