Human judgment is the process of assessing information and making decisions through experience, reasoning, and context. In responsible artificial intelligence (AI), it keeps people meaningfully involved in oversight, preserving agency and accountability rather than treating technical solutions as sufficient. section 10.25
Judgment is especially important when using large language models (LLMs). Digital literacy helps people recognize capabilities and limitations, detect errors, interrogate and edit outputs, and decide when human review is necessary. Healthy skepticism matters because systems may appear more humanlike or reliable than they are. section 10.26
Responsible judgment involves:
- Checking AI outputs for errors instead of accepting them automatically. section 10.26
- Interrogating, editing, and supplementing generated material. section 10.26
- Balancing model assistance with human agency and institutional accountability. section 10.25
