Just-in-time access

As explained in Azure Security

Just-in-time privileged access grants elevated administrative permissions only when needed and for a limited period.

Just-in-time access limits privileged permissions to the period when administrative work requires them. Azure AD Privileged Identity Management (PIM) reduces accidental changes and limits damage from compromised identities. section 2.6.1

PIM supports controlled, auditable privilege through:

  • Eligible assignments, which let users activate a role when needed, instead of holding permanent access. section 2.6.1
  • Active or eligible assignments for Azure RBAC roles, Azure AD roles, and privileged access groups, with defined start and end times. section 2.6.1
  • Approval flows, activation alerts, auditing, and access reviews for ongoing oversight. section 2.6.1 section 2.6.2

Activate a role when needed

Open the eligible Azure roles, select a role such as Virtual Machine Administrator Login, and choose Activate. Provide the duration, justification, and resource scope. Complete Azure MFA if requested, then wait for approval when the activation flow requires it. section 2.6.2

How Azure Security covers it

How deep it goes
Provides an implementation workflow for role activation, MFA, approval, alerts, and reviews rather than explaining PIM internals.
Examples
Uses Virtual Machine Administrator Login activation, time limits, justification, resource scope, MFA challenges, and approval notifications.
What you can do after
Operate PIM to activate eligible roles on demand, satisfy MFA or approval requirements, and review privileged activation history.
How it connects
Connects privileged identity management with Azure RBAC, Azure AD roles, privileged access groups, Azure MFA, approval workflows, and access reviews.
