Layer-7 load balancer

As explained in Kubernetes for Developers

A layer-7 load balancer distributes application-layer requests using information such as HTTP paths and hostnames.

A layer-7 load balancer distributes HTTP requests using application details such as URI paths and hostnames. In Kubernetes, an Ingress places multiple internal Services behind one external IP, allowing one public domain or IP to serve several services. section 7.2

Ingress can route requests by:

  • Path, such as / for one Service and /robohash for another. section 7.2
  • Hostname, such as timeserver.example.com and robohash.example.com. section 7.2
  • Both hostname and path when the routing rules require it. section 7.2

Two applications behind one IP

An Ingress can send / to timeserver-internal and /robohash to robohash-internal. These internal Services use NodePort, while the Ingress exposes a shared external address.

Figure 7.4 The Ingress’s rule list, or URL map, allows one HTTP load balancer to handle the traffic for multiple services.

The URL-map diagram shows how one HTTP load balancer directs traffic to multiple Services. section 7.2

How Kubernetes for Developers covers it

How deep it goes
Explains path and hostname routing, HTTPS termination, and Service requirements, but does not detail controller internals.
Examples
Demonstrates timeserver and robohash Services selected by URI paths or hostnames.
What it assumes
Assumes basic Kubernetes Services and Pods, while showing how internal NodePort Services connect to Ingress.
What you can do after
Operate/configure HTTP routing with Kubernetes Ingress manifests and inspect assigned addresses, backends, and health status.
How it connects
Connects Ingress with HTTP, HTTPS, TLS termination, Services, NodePort, Pods, and path-based routing.
