Mistake #34: using Windows indiscriminately. Linux is a viable host for SQL Server, and choosing it can align the database platform with application skills, operating-system choices, and licensing constraints. section 8.2
MagicChoc chooses the wrong platform
MagicChoc's new Go application runs on Ubuntu virtual machines. Its database team chose Windows Server 2022 because they knew SQL Server rather than MySQL, but this forced Linux-based developers toward Windows and added Windows Server licensing costs. Hosting SQL Server on Linux would have lowered that barrier while preserving SQL Server features such as AlwaysOn, HIERARCHYID, and windowing functions. section 8.2
Use these checks before selecting Linux for a SQL Server deployment:
- Match the database host to the application environment when developer familiarity, operational consistency, or license cost matters. section 8.2
- Confirm the distribution and SQL Server version: SQL Server 2022 is supported on Red Hat, SUSE, and Ubuntu. section 8.11
- Consider Linux containers for suitable deployments, and store database files in a Docker volume so removing the container does not remove the data. section 8.11

Use the Windows-versus-Linux decision tree to structure the platform choice instead of treating Windows as the automatic default. section 8.2
