A logical SQL Server is the Azure resource that hosts and manages Azure SQL databases. It handles database-level concerns such as backups, security, and availability without requiring physical hardware maintenance. section 1.2.1 section 10.3.1
Key points to keep in mind:
- Create the server before creating an Azure SQL Database on it. section 10.3.1
- Choose authentication carefully: administrator credentials are convenient for demonstrations, while Entra ID-only authentication is available for server creation. section 10.3.1
- Treat the administrator username as permanent because it cannot be changed after creation. section 10.3.1
- Balance service objectives, security features, and geo-replication against cost; higher tiers and premium features cost more. section 10.3.1
Create a server and database
Azure CLI can create a logical server and then place a Basic-tier database on it:\n\nC:/> az sql server create --name BanningBooksServer --resource-group BanningRG --location australiaeast --admin-user banningadmin --admin-password <yourpassword>\n\nC:/> az sql db create --resource-group BanningRG --server BanningBooksServer --name BanningBooksDB --service-objective Basic\n\nThe server command establishes the host and administrator; the database command selects the server and its pricing tier.
