A major upgrade moves an Atlas cluster to a new MongoDB major version, such as 7.0 to 8.0, bringing significant engine changes and new features. Unlike minor upgrades, it requires manual initiation and preparation. section 21.4
Prepare and control the upgrade by checking these conditions:
- Keep the Atlas cluster healthy before starting. section 21.4
- Complete any on-demand snapshots before initiating the upgrade. section 21.4
- Upgrade only one major version at a time; version skipping is not allowed. section 21.4
- Review release notes and verify MongoDB driver compatibility because new versions can introduce non-backward-compatible behavior. section 21.4
Typical upgrade path
Moving from MongoDB 7.0 to 8.0 is a major upgrade. Moving from 8.0.3 to 8.0.5 is instead a minor upgrade, focused on patches and improvements within the same major version. section 21.4
