Minikube

As explained in Kubernetes in Action, Second Edition

Minikube is a tool for running a local Kubernetes cluster, typically using a virtual machine or containers as the cluster environment.

Minikube runs a local Kubernetes cluster for testing Kubernetes and developing applications. Its usual cluster has a single node running in a Linux virtual machine; on Linux, it can also run directly on the host through Docker. section 3.1.2

Choose the environment that matches your machine:

  • Use a virtual machine when you have a hypervisor such as VirtualBox; Docker is not required for this mode. section 3.1.2
  • On Linux, use Docker to run Kubernetes directly in the host operating system and avoid the virtual machine. section 3.1.2
  • Install the single Minikube executable on macOS, Linux, or Windows, following the current platform-specific instructions. section 3.1.2

Start and verify a cluster

Run `minikube start` and wait while the VM image and Kubernetes component images are downloaded. Then run `minikube status`. A healthy result reports the host, Kubelet, and API server as running, with kubeconfig configured so kubectl uses the Minikube cluster. section 3.1.2

How Kubernetes in Action, Second Edition covers it

How deep it goes
Explains installation choices, startup, status checks, and single-node architecture without covering cluster administration in depth.
Examples
Uses installation commands, minikube start output, minikube status output, and a single-node cluster diagram.
What it assumes
Requires a supported operating system plus either Docker or a hypervisor, while introducing Kubernetes deployment locally from the beginning.
What you can do after
Operate/configure a local single-node Kubernetes cluster and verify its core components with Minikube and kubectl.
How it connects
Connects Kubernetes clusters with virtual machines, Docker, hypervisors, Kubelet, the Kubernetes API server, and kubectl.
