A permalink is the persistent URL assigned to an individual web page or blog post. Unlike a site’s domain name, which points to the home page, a permalink identifies a specific interior page or post. section 2.2.1
A typical permalink works like this:
- It begins with the site address, such as https://siteaddress.com. section 2.4
- It adds a page title or other identifying text, such as /about-us. section 2.4
- The identifying portion is called a slug; spaces are replaced with hyphens. section 2.4
- Individual permalinks can be hidden behind a password while a site remains private or under construction. section 2.4
Example
For a site at https://siteaddress.com, the About Us page might use https://siteaddress.com/about-us. A visitor can reach that interior page directly, even before the site’s home page is made public, unless a coming-soon screen covers the pages. section 2.4
