RADIUS server

As explained in Acing the CCNA Exam: Volume 2 Advanced Networking and Security

A RADIUS server is a network service that processes RADIUS authentication, authorization, and accounting requests.

A RADIUS server processes authentication, authorization, and accounting requests for network access. A wireless LAN controller requires RADIUS when using WPA-Enterprise authentication with 802.1X/EAP. section 21.1.2

During initial WLC configuration, the relevant decision is whether to configure a RADIUS server:

  • Answer yes when the WLAN will use WPA-Enterprise with 802.1X/EAP. section 21.1.2
  • Answer no when using the CCNA-scope WPA-Personal preshared-key approach. section 21.1.2

WLC wizard prompt

The wizard displays “Configure a RADIUS Server now? [YES][no]: no”. The default is no; select yes to begin RADIUS configuration for enterprise authentication. section 21.1.2

How Acing the CCNA Exam: Volume 2 Advanced Networking and Security covers it

How deep it goes
Defines the authentication dependency and wizard decision but stops short of server commands or request-processing internals.
Examples
Uses the WLC initial-configuration prompt that asks whether to configure a RADIUS server.
What it assumes
Assumes familiarity with WLC setup and distinguishes enterprise 802.1X/EAP authentication from preshared-key authentication.
What you can do after
Evaluate when a WLC requires RADIUS during WLAN authentication setup.
How it connects
Connects RADIUS servers with wireless LAN controllers, WPA-Enterprise, 802.1X, and EAP.
