Re-platforming

As explained in Learn Docker in a Month of Lunches, Second Edition

Replatforming is a migration strategy that changes the platform on which an application runs while preserving the application itself.

Replatforming moves an application to a different runtime platform without changing the application itself. Packaging a legacy Windows application in a Windows Docker image can bring it into container-based build, deployment, and management workflows without an expensive rewrite. section 13.0

Choose replatforming when the migration goal favors operational consistency over application modernization:

  • Use it for complex or lightly developed applications that cannot justify a long rewrite delivering the same functionality. section 13.5
  • Move the application to Windows containers so it can run locally in containers and on cloud container services. section 13.0 section 13.5
  • Distinguish it from rehosting: rehosting keeps a close approximation of the existing infrastructure, while replatforming models the application for another platform. section 13.5

Legacy Windows application

An older .NET Framework application that cannot be migrated easily to current .NET can be packaged in a Windows container. The application remains unchanged while its build and deployment model becomes compatible with container tooling. section 13.5 section 13.0

How Learn Docker in a Month of Lunches, Second Edition covers it

How deep it goes
Defines the strategy and compares migration choices, then focuses on containerizing Windows applications and their platform quirks.
Examples
Uses Windows Docker images, Windows containers, and a legacy .NET Framework application as concrete migration examples.
What it assumes
Assumes familiarity with application migration and container techniques while addressing Windows-container-specific quirks.
What you can do after
Apply it by packaging an unchanged legacy Windows application for local containers and cloud container services.
How it connects
Connects legacy applications with Docker, Windows containers, cloud migration, rehosting, and application rewrites.
