Remote mode

As explained in Podman in Action: Secure, rootless containers for Kubernetes, microservices, and more

Remote mode is an operating mode in which a Podman client sends container-management requests to a Podman service running on another system or through a local service socket.

Remote mode lets a Podman client manage containers through a Podman service running elsewhere or behind a local socket. The client sends requests through the REST API instead of creating containers as children of the client process. section 9.5

A remote command keeps the familiar Podman CLI while executing container operations on the server. SSH connects the client to the Linux host, and systemd socket activation exposes the Podman service. section 9.5.2

Local and remote commands

podman --remote version reports separate client and server details. podman --remote run ubi8 echo hi uses the same command shape as local Podman, but the container runs on the service host.

How Podman in Action: Secure, rootless containers for Kubernetes, microservices, and more covers it

How deep it goes
Explains REST requests, SSH transport, socket activation, rootless setup, and unsupported client options; it stops short of enumerating every option.
Examples
Demonstrates version inspection, remote image execution, SSHD configuration, Podman socket activation, and remote host inspection.
What it assumes
Assumes basic Podman commands and Linux administration, while introducing client-server roles, SSHD, socket activation, and rootless service persistence.
What you can do after
Operate/configure Podman clients and Linux servers for local-socket testing or SSH-backed container management.
How it connects
Connects Podman clients with REST API, SSH, systemd socket activation, rootless containers, and continuous integration.
