Response generation produces a candidate answer from retrieved passages. In retrieval-augmented generation, it can combine relevant content into a cohesive, context-aware response rather than merely selecting and reformulating existing text. section 6.1.3 section 6.3.2
A grounded response workflow can:
- Retrieve passages, then generate a candidate answer from them. section 6.2.2
- Compare the answer with the passages; if support is weak, offer transfer to a human agent. If no documents were retrieved, deflect without invoking generation. section 6.2.2
When a medical answer is not grounded
A user asks whether booster side effects could worsen dysphagia associated with achalasia. The candidate answer says there is no clear evidence linking them, but the retrieved passages do not support that claim. The system flags the weak match and offers a specialist handoff. section 6.2.2
Figure 6.8 Supplementing RAG with human agents. If the answer has poor semantic overlap with the retrieved documents, send the user to a human agent instead.
Shows the human-agent handoff when a generated answer has poor overlap with retrieved documents. section 6.2.2
