RoI pooling

As explained in Inside Deep Learning: Math, Algorithms, Models

A pooling procedure that extracts fixed-size representations from variable-sized proposed regions so later layers can process them uniformly.

RoI pooling converts each proposed feature-map region into the same small shape, allowing one prediction head to process proposals uniformly. section 8.4.1

Within Faster R-CNN, the operation fits into this sequence:

  • A backbone produces a multi-channel feature map from the image. section 8.4.1
  • The region proposal network identifies feature-map regions that may contain objects. section 8.4.1

PyTorch shape normalization

A compact implementation uses nn.AdaptiveMaxPool2d((7, 7)), followed by nn.Flatten(), a hidden nn.Linear layer, and a final classifier. This gives every proposal the same downstream representation size.

How Inside Deep Learning: Math, Algorithms, Models covers it

How deep it goes
Explains the pipeline and PyTorch layers, but stops short of implementing Faster R-CNN from scratch.
Examples
Uses stop-sign detection and a 7×7 AdaptiveMaxPool2d classification head.
What it assumes
Assumes feature extraction and proposed regions, while connecting them to the final classification step.
What you can do after
Apply it via PyTorch using AdaptiveMaxPool2d, flattening, and fully connected prediction layers.
How it connects
Connects the backbone, feature map, region proposal network, adaptive max pooling, and fully connected layer.
