Schema alignment reconciles incoming fields and types with a target table definition. Reliable ingestion detects the incoming schema, validates compatibility, and applies safe mappings or transformations before writing. Depending on the change, a pipeline may extend the table schema, route a new field into a variant column, or cast it to a compatible type. section 6.1.3
A practical alignment workflow includes:
- Read the current Iceberg schema and inspect incoming data at the start of each batch or micro-batch job. section 6.1.3
- Validate missing fields, type mismatches, reused field names, and other compatibility conflicts. section 6.1.3
- Choose fail-fast checks, controlled casting, schema extension, or variant-column routing according to data-quality and resilience requirements. section 6.1.3
- In streaming pipelines, reconcile changes continuously with schema registries or metadata catalogs. section 6.1.3
New source field
When incoming data adds a field, the pipeline can extend the Iceberg table, route the field into a variant column, or cast it to a compatible type. Without validation, the change may reject records, corrupt data silently, or produce inconsistent queries. section 6.1.3
