SQL authentication

As explained in Building Web APIs with ASP.NET Core

SQL Server authentication verifies a connection using credentials managed by SQL Server.

SQL authentication connects to SQL Server with credentials managed by SQL Server. In SSMS, choose SQL Server authentication and provide the sa account credentials when the instance uses Mixed Mode. section 4.2.4

Configure access in two separate steps:

  • Add a login to authenticate against the SQL Server instance. section 4.2.4
  • Add a database user to authorize that login for the MyBGList database. section 4.2.4
  • Place the resulting username and password in the web API connection string. section 4.2.4

How Building Web APIs with ASP.NET Core covers it

How deep it goes
Explains SSMS connection settings and separates instance logins from database users, without detailing credential commands.
Examples
Uses SSMS, a local SQLEXPRESS instance, the sa account, and the MyBGList database.
What it assumes
Assumes SQL Server installation and SSMS access, while distinguishing Windows authentication from SQL Server authentication.
What you can do after
Operate/configure SQL Server access by creating a login, mapping a database user, and supplying credentials to a connection string.
How it connects
Connects SQL authentication with Mixed Mode, connection strings, SQL Server logins, database users, and role membership.
