A support system is a network of teammates, mentors, or trusted colleagues who provide perspective, advice, encouragement, and practical help during difficult work. section 8.4.1
Use a support system without taking responsibility away from the people you support:
- Build dependable working relationships before urgent help is needed. section 8.4.1
- Pause before responding to a difficult client, then seek advice when the situation needs research or perspective. section 8.4.1
- Debrief with the team after challenging meetings so people can share reactions and plan an effective response. section 8.4.1
- Offer feedback and guidance instead of quietly redoing another person’s work. section 10.5.4
A team debrief
After a difficult client meeting, an internal project team meets to discuss what happened, interpret the client’s comments, and decide how to respond. Knowing that others share the pressure helps each person stay composed. section 8.4.1
Supporting growth
A lead developer helps a hesitant developer build confidence, practice presenting technical decisions, and try unfamiliar responsibilities rather than taking over the work. section 1.4.2 section 10.5.4
