VTP transparent mode

As explained in Acing the CCNA Exam: Volume 1 Fundamentals and Protocols

VTP transparent mode is a VTP operating mode in which a switch maintains an independent VLAN database, does not synchronize it, and forwards VTP messages.

VTP transparent mode lets a switch manage its own VLAN database without synchronizing with other switches. It can create, modify, and delete VLANs, but does not advertise those changes. It still forwards VTP messages between switches in the same domain. section 13.2.2

Key operational points:

  • Use vtp mode transparent in global configuration mode. section 13.2.2
  • Keep the switch’s VLAN changes local; transparent mode does not synchronize or send its own VTP advertisements. section 13.3
  • Expect a revision number of 0 on a transparent-mode switch. section 13.2.2

Forwarding without synchronization

If SW1 creates VLAN 5, SW2 in transparent mode forwards SW1’s VTP message to SW3 but keeps its own VLAN database unchanged. SW3 can synchronize with SW1.

How Acing the CCNA Exam: Volume 1 Fundamentals and Protocols covers it

How deep it goes
Explains VLAN operations, advertisements, synchronization, forwarding, and revision behavior, but does not detail packet formats.
Examples
Uses vtp mode configuration and an SW1-SW2-SW3 scenario to demonstrate forwarded messages without database synchronization.
What it assumes
Assumes basic VLAN and switch knowledge while defining VTP modes and synchronization behavior.
What you can do after
Operate/configure a switch independently with vtp mode transparent while preserving VTP message forwarding.
How it connects
Connects VTP transparent mode to VLAN databases, VTP domains, VTP servers, VTP clients, and VTP off mode.
