10BASE-T is an Ethernet physical-layer standard that provides 10 Mbps communication over two pairs, or four wires, in a UTP cable. Each pair carries one direction of communication through an 8P8C connector. section 3.3.2 section 3.5
For 10BASE-T cabling, remember these practical points:
- Use pins 1–2 as one pair and pins 3–6 as the other; pins 3–6 are not pins 3–4. section 3.3.2
- Use a straight-through cable between unlike device types, such as a PC and switch; use crossover wiring between like transmit/receive arrangements unless Auto MDI-X adjusts the connection. section 3.3.2
- Keep the UTP connection within the 100-meter maximum supported by this connection type. section 3.5
