Activation

As explained in Natural Language Processing in Action, Second Edition

A hidden layer activation is the numerical output produced by a neural-network unit or layer for a particular input state.

A hidden-layer activation is the numerical state a neural-network unit or layer produces for an input. In an RNN, activation values stored in h or hidden act as evolving encodings of the tokens processed so far. section 8.1.2

Each new token overwrites the previous values, blending earlier and current meaning into a compact, blurry representation. Because processing order matters, the activation changes as the sequence unfolds. section 8.1.2

A paint roller for meaning

Imagine rolling paint across a sentence: letters become smeared, but the resulting mark preserves an impression of the whole text. An RNN activation similarly compresses the tokens it has read into a form the network can reuse. section 8.1.2

How Natural Language Processing in Action, Second Edition covers it

How deep it goes
Explains storage, sequential overwriting, and compact representation, but does not detail the underlying neuron equations.
Examples
Uses token sequences, evolving text encodings, and a paint-smudge analogy to illustrate activation values.
What it assumes
Assumes sequential tokens and embeddings while clarifying how hidden activations encode the text read so far.
What you can do after
Evaluate how an RNN activation changes as each token contributes to the sequence representation.
How it connects
Connects activations with RNNs, embeddings, hidden layers, sequence processing, and natural-language processing.
