Artifact repository

As explained in Platform Engineering on Kubernetes

An artifact repository is a repository service that stores, versions, and distributes software artifacts.

An artifact repository stores binaries produced by a service pipeline and makes them available to later pipeline steps and other systems. Publishing a binary under the source repository’s tag version links it to the code that produced it. section 3.4.2 section 3.4

For a pipeline to publish binaries, its repository must be reachable and configured with valid credentials.

  • Copy the built binary to the artifact repository over the network, using the version associated with the source repository tag. section 3.4
  • Ensure the repository is accessible from where the pipeline runs and that credentials allow it to push artifacts. section 3.4.2
Figure 3.5 Running pipelines requires a lot of infrastructure to be in place. This includes maintaining services and repositories, creating users and credentials, and making sure that these services (repositories) are accessible from remote locations.

Shows the external repositories and access requirements a running pipeline depends on. section 3.4.2

How Platform Engineering on Kubernetes covers it

How deep it goes
Explains binary publication, tag-aligned traceability, credentials, and network access, but not repository setup.
Examples
Shows a built binary copied over the network and published using the source repository tag’s version.
What it assumes
Assumes a pipeline that builds binaries and identifies valid credentials and network access as publishing requirements.
What you can do after
Operate pipeline publishing by providing valid credentials and ensuring repository network access.
How it connects
Connects artifact repositories to service pipelines, source-code tags, container registries, and Helm chart repositories.
